Many fashion historians opine that the leg o'mutton sleeves of 1894-97 symbolized the new aggressiveness of women. Their existence in the late 1820s-1830s is interesting.

Particularly since the 1830s is considered part of the romantic era, where fragility in women is what was emphasized. One must wonder how much of that speculation on the part of fashion historians is just that - speculation. :)
